
Obverse Β β features the left-facing portrait of George Washington, the first US President. Inscriptions: “LIBERTY” at top, “IN GOD WE TRUST” on the left, year “1991” at bottom, and mint mark “D” to the right of Washington’s neck.
ReverseΒ β features a Bald Eagle with spread wings, standing on a bundle of arrows and olive branch. Inscriptions: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” around the top, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” (Out of many, one) above the eagle, and “QUARTER DOLLAR” at the bottom.
About the design
The Washington Quarter design has been used since 1932, based on a sculpture by John Flanagan. This is the classic “eagle reverse” design used from 1932 to 1998, before the 50 State Quarters program began.
