Obverse Β β features the right-facing portrait of Susan B. Anthony, the famous women’s suffrage activist. Inscriptions: “LIBERTY” at top, “IN GOD WE TRUST” to the right, year “1979” at bottom, surrounded by 13 stars. Mint mark “P” is visible to the left of Anthony’s portrait β notably the first US coin ever to bear the “P” Philadelphia mint mark.
ReverseΒ β features a Bald Eagle landing on the Moon with Earth visible in the background, referencing the Apollo 11 Moon landing. Inscriptions: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” around the top, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” above the eagle, and “ONE DOLLAR” at the bottom.
Historical significance
The SBA Dollar was the first US circulating coin to feature a real woman (previously only Liberty as a symbolic figure appeared). It was minted 1979β1981 and again in 1999, and was often confused with the Quarter due to its similar size.
