2 Lei, Moldova 2022

 

Reverse (Image 1) — features the denomination “2 LEI” in the center. Above the text is a large digit “2” with horizontal hatching in its upper section. To the left of the digit, there is a stylized oak branch. The year of mintage, “2022”, appears at the bottom. The right side features geometric and floral patterns that, when combined with other coins in the series (1, 5, and 10 lei), form a complete unified design.

Obverse (Image 2) — features a stylized sun with a human face in the center. The National Coat of Arms of the Republic of Moldova is positioned in the lower right. The inscription “REPUBLICA MOLDOVA” arcs along the left edge. This side is part of a “puzzle” design: when the 1, 2, 5, and 10 lei coins are placed together, they recreate the historical coat of arms of the Principality of Moldavia (an aurochs head with a star, rose, crescent, and sun).

The designer The coin was designed by the artist Corneliu Calarașu.

Where it was minted The 2 lei coins have been struck at the State Mint of Romania (Monetăria Statului) in Bucharest since their introduction in 2018.

About the Moldovan Leu The leu (plural: lei) has been the official currency of Moldova since 1993. One leu is divided into 100 bani. The 2 lei coin was introduced into circulation on February 28, 2018, as part of a new series of metallic coins intended to replace low-denomination paper banknotes.
