Reverse ย โ features the denomination “5 LEI” in the center. Above the number is a large digit “5” with vertical hatching in its upper section. Below the text is the year of mintage, “2019”. To the left of the digit is a stylized oak branch. The right side contains geometric and floral patterns that are part of a larger composition; when placed next to the 1, 2, and 10 lei coins, they form a complete decorative frame.
Obverseย โ displays a stylized crescent moon with a human profile in the center. In the lower-left area, the National Coat of Arms of the Republic of Moldova is positioned. The inscription “REPUBLICA MOLDOVA” arcs along the right side. This coin is also part of a “puzzle” design: when the four denominations (1, 2, 5, and 10 lei) are arranged together, they recreate the historical coat of arms of the Principality of Moldavia, featuring the head of an aurochs.
The designer The coin was designed by the artist Corneliu Calaraศu.
Where it was minted This coin was struck at the State Mint of Romania (Monetฤria Statului) in Bucharest.
About the Moldovan Leu The 5 lei coin was introduced on February 28, 2018. It was created to replace the 5 lei paper banknote, which is being gradually withdrawn from circulation. The metallic version is more durable and cost-effective for the National Bank of Moldova. The bimetallic-like appearance (achieved through plating) and the innovative “puzzle” design make this series highly popular among collectors.
