What’s on the coin
The centre of the national side depicts a stylised sunflower whose petals resemble silhouettes of people holding hands, embracing and protecting each other β embodying unity, support and the power of being together. Through artistic means, the sunflower is conceived as the rising sun β the hope of a new beginning β and as birds representing freedom, hope and courage, as people rising above circumstances, never accepting a forced will β an allusion to those who have sacrificed their lives and their departing souls.
The composition is surrounded by the inscriptions “LIETUVA” (Lithuania) and “KARTU SU UKRAINA” (Together with Ukraine), the year of issue 2023, and the mintmark of the Lithuanian Mint.
The occasion
On 24th February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine from multiple locations. With this special 2 euro coin, Lithuania wanted to show that the Lithuanian people stand with and think of the Ukrainian people. The sunflower is Ukraine’s national flower, making it a deeply symbolic choice for the design.
The edge
The edge is striated and inscribed with “LAISVΔ VIENYBΔ GEROVΔ” β meaning Freedom, Solidarity, Prosperity β each word followed by a star.
